How to update ubuntu 16.04 to 17.04

Update ubuntu 16.04 to 17.04, Update ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04. Well, Ubuntu 17.04 is released, Want to taste a new flavour. So this is article is for you. Ubuntu servers are quite busy at this time. So It’ll take a while to push updates to your system. We can do it manually.

Before proceeding update process make sure you’re up-to-date with the latest PPA and Blah Blah Blah. Run the below command to check whether everything is up-to-date.

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Update Ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04

If you’re using Ubuntu 16.10 you can update directly by following the procedures below.

  1. Go to Softwares & updates
  2. Click Updates Tab
  3. Notify me of a New Ubuntu version Select For any New Version. 
  4. And click the Close Button.

And In the Terminal run the following command given below :

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Press Y key and Hit Enter. It’ll take some time, Go and make a Cup of Coffee and Relax. After Installation Completes you have to reboot your system. And you’re ready to go.

It is little tricky to Update ubuntu 16.04 to 17.04. It’s not an LTS version. means It has support only for 9 months and so far. Afterwards, Ubuntu will release its new version.

But Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade directly from ver 16.04 to 17.04 for that you have to update to 16.10 then again you have to run the update command to Install ubuntu 17.04

  1. Go to Softwares & updates
  2. Click Updates Tab
  3. Notify me of a New Ubuntu version Select For any New Version. 
  4. And click the Close Button.

Open the Terminal and Run the Following command

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

It’ll take some while for downloading and Installation. Wait..It will update the version of Ubuntu 16.10 then you have to run the update command again to update ubuntu 17.04.

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Press Y key and Hit Enter. It’ll take some time. Go and make a Cup of Coffee and Relax. After Installation Completes you have to reboot your system. And you’re ready to go.

We hope it worked well for you. But I would advice to stay in the LTS version. Because LTS is Long Term Supported stable release.
